Under IDEA, the Federal Law that governs Special Education, parents may request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) when they disagree with their child's most recent assessment. These are conducted by Licensed Educational Psychologists and provided at the District's expense. IEE's provide an IEP team with a second opinion on a child's strengths and weaknesses as a learner and assist the IEP team in developing appropriate goals and services for the child to make annual progress on these goals.

Local districts often find themselves with more assessments than their current psychologists/special education staff can handle. Private psycho-educational assessments may be conducted at family expense. These services are available for free at your local school district (even if your child attends a private or charter school). Families that typically are seeking private assessments, wish to better understand their child's (or their own) learning needs, but may not wish to engage with their child's school and these assessments are typically done confidentially. Sharing the assessment findings with school personnel is only done with parent's written and prior consent.

Psycho-Educational Assessments can be confusing and contain a great deal of "psycho-mumbo-jumbo" that can be hard to understand. These one-hour sessions provide you with the opportunity to ask questions and have any and all areas of your child's current (psycho-ed) assessment explained to you. Some parents find this helpful prior to an initial or triennial IEP; others prefer to hold the session after the meeting. I have extensive training in Special Education law, though I am not an attorney.

The Office of Civil Rights (OCR), a component of the U.S. Department of Education, enforces Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, (Section 504) a civil rights statute which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. I have written Section 504 Guidelines for various local districts and county offices. These one-hour sessions provide you with the opportunity to ask questions and have any and all areas of your child's 504 Plan/assessment explained to you. I have also had experience working at high school levels and aligning 504 accommodations to the college board's accommodations so that students may receive these when taking the SATs. I have training in this area, though I am not an attorney.

IEP documents can be confusing, dry and sometimes difficult to understand. I can assist you in reviewing your child's special education file. I will review recent assessments to ensure your child's assessments were comprehensive; that the strengths and weaknesses of your child are captured in the IEP and that goals and services align with these needs. I will also review IEP goals to determine if they are appropriate or need amended. My goals is to answer all your questions and provide you with the tools in your toolkit to advocate on your child's behalf during IEP meetings. I have trained hundreds of special educators (across the state) on IEP Development and Goal Writing and will help you make sure your child's needs are being met and that their IEP is legally compliant, being followed with fidelity, and that the supports and services in the IEP are helping your child access their learning. This service contains the psycho-ed assessment review within the service.

Sometimes Parents can feel as though their voice is not being heard at IEP Team meetings. I make every attempt to assist parents in preparing for IEP meetings so they may be their child's best advocate, but in certain circumstances, I will attend IEP meetings to help facilitate conversations and assist Parents in voicing their concerns so that they are addressed within the IEP meeting.

In my experience, families and children are often in crisis when their child requires this level of support for their education and they not only require a fast, effective support, but someone who truly understands the strain this has on their family and child. Placement changes such as this are some of the most difficult choices Parents will make and I understand the emotional needs of these situations, as well as how to quickly find your child the right NPS/RTC.
NPS Placement (day treatment): I have extensive personal experience with the Nonpublic Schools (NPS) within Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer counties. I know each school's director(s) and their specialty areas. I have helped hundreds of families place students both in and out of NPS' that fit their child's exact needs.
RTC Placement (Residential Treatment Centers): I have personally visited most of the RTC's within our region and the SF Bay Area. Additionally, I have toured and visited many RTCs in Utah (some of which are locked facilities). Similar to NPS placements, I have personal relationships with many RTC director(s) and know each RTC's specialty area so I may pair it with your child's unique mental health needs.
My goal, as should be that of the IEP Team, is to find an NPS/RTC placement as quickly as possible that will also help stabilize your child and teach them tools to successfully deal with their mental health so that they may return to their home district. I will also assist IEP teams with building a transition plan to return a student to their home district, when data supports this safe return. I have also worked with transport companies and can connect you with those resources.

It is my honor to serve as an Expert Witness at Due Process Hearings. My extensive background as a teacher, psychologist and district/county administrator provide me with a background of knowledge of the many levels of education. Additionally, I have extensive legal trainings (though I am not a lawyer) on Special Education compliance and law. I pride myself on being able to provide clear, concise information that is easy to understand and can analyze IEP documents for their strengths and weaknesses in accordance with local, State and Federal regulations, policies, codes and laws.
